No More Brad and Angelina
It seems that hardly a day goes by without another celebrity couple announcing their divorce. Brad and Angelina are the latest in a long line of celebrity couples to announce they are getting divorced.
It’s always a bit of a shock when a celebrity couple separate. We tend to expect that because their lives are so seemingly perfect – good looks, fame and fortune etc that we wonder how anything go wrong. However even with all of the trappings of fame, celebrities are normal people with their own insecurities and problems.
Do the pressures of being a celebrity make it much harder to stay in a marriage than for us mere mortals?
Why Celebrity Marriages Often Don’t Last the Distance
Part of the nature of being a celebrity means that they often parted from their loved ones for an extended period of time as well as working with co stars who are very attractive. This always fuels the romance rumours. Absence doesn’t always make the heart grow fonder and there is the temptation to – love the one you’re with. We have already seen this exact thing happened with Brad and Angelina in Mr and Mrs Smith.
Celebrities mostly don’t have the financial shackles of most married couples. The financial issues associated with divorce can keep couples together especially if the marriage isn’t bad but it just isn’t great either.
Because celebrity couples mostly don’t have this issue does it make it easier for them to split rather than trying to work through their problems. We have seen some bitter divorce proceedings played out in the media with divorce settlements in the millions.
Is there some other underlying reason why celebrity marriages often don’t last the distance? For Brad and Angelina, twelve years together, two of those as a married couple, is a long time to be together. There will always be media speculation about the reasons for the divorce. The only people who really know the truth are Brad and Angelina despite the amount of probing and speculation by the media.
Does being in the spotlight cast an unnatural light on a relationship? Is there always an added pressure to look as though everything is happy 100% of the time?
Even marriages that do last the distance and that are not in the public eye have rough patches. Most couples have the opportunity to work through these hiccups without scrutiny and rumor of a public setting.
Any hiccup or even supposed hiccup from a celebrity couple is suddenly splashed all over the media. It is also accompanied by a good deal of speculation in order to sell the story. For the celebrities involved, it must be hard to continually deflect negative media attention and almost impossible to avoid the media altogether.
The relentless pressure to behave and look a certain way which is expected by the public must be wearing over time. News of a celebrity divorce spreads like wildfire among the media no matter how many pleas there are for privacy.
The paparazzi will now be out in full force to get a shot of Brad or Angelina that can be linked to the impending divorce. This may return a big reward for the photographer who is cashing in on someone else’s misfortune.
Can you blame them? Well no, not really, they are reacting to what sells gossipy news and doing their job. If there wasn’t a demand for such images then their job wouldn’t exist. It is their livelihood and there seems to be no boundaries.
Brad and Angelina have a large family and despite pleas for privacy there is no doubt that sadly, the children will be affected. Understandably any parent is very protective of their children in such circumstances.
One thing is for sure, Brad and Angelina won’t be growing old together.
